meant. 99% percent of the display of that flag is benign, and I can’t account for the 1% of the racists and the dopes who desecrate it like George has. By the way, I put him in the “dope” category. It is a sensitive and nuanced issue, and jokers like him should keep his hands off it.

And what is with this “Western Motif*?! Why is a grown man running around a Mid Atlantic Upper South State dressed like Gene Autry?? A couple of years ago I was down at the Labor Day Parade in Buena Vista, doing my “Cooter” thing and having a great time walking the route. And George was riding his horse behind me. And I swear to you, it looked to me like that time Michael Dukakis was riding around in the tank.

Well, I’ve had a whack at Big George, bless his soul. And it’s been fun. But what this crowd of right wing wackos has done to the greatest country in the world is not fun. Allen has been an automatic vote for Little George, and that does not reflect the centrist views of the vast majority of Virginians. It is time to bring the boy home to his pony.

The reason Jim Webb impresses me is that he is a Reagan Democrat, one of those folks who left the party in the seventies, but who is coming back to what he feels is his natural home. Yet he is still enough of a “traditional values” guy to appeal to a lot of folks who have been voting GOP. This is what frightens the Republican Party nationally. If Democrats can restore their resonance in the heartland of America from which they came, the days of Cheney and Rummy and Condi and Rove and Little George are numbered. Jim Webb is indeed George « Allen’s worst nightmare.
