enrolled him in a writing course to not only help him with catching up on schoolwork but to give him an outlet for his creative energies.
Helping Jan on weekends, neighbor, friend and now tutor, Tutt Harris, would coitve and work with him for several hours.
“There’s a book here,” recalled Harris as she related how an assignment given Jan expanded and expanded. “He has a language gift,” said Harris who wouldn’t let Jan get by with simple descriptions but encourage him.
“RWC,” said Jan, “that was our code - recognizable word content.”
During his formal schooling, Jan spent some time at Hearthstone School and it was there that the character for his book was inspired.
“He had a green mohawk,” said Jan who believes that this former classmate now lives in California.
“I was overjoyed,” said an effusive Harris as she described the process that eventually led to Jan’s book, “Smith in the Future.”
“How he writes, how he thinks, to watch the wheels turning, it was wonderful,” continued Harris who now teaches at Wakefield School in The Plains
Jan’s book is about a 12year-old boy who loves skateboarding and gets sent into the future. There he meets another kid who can help him return to his own time.
