An effort to commemorate Rappahannock County’s role in the Civil War has been resurrected three months after it was buried by a state agency.
The Virginia Department of Transportation awarded $86,000 on June 21 for signs and a visitor kiosk that will explain how Rappahannock fit in to the the four-year war.
In late March, VDOT rep resentatives said Rappahannock’s application didn’t make the cut. But the story changed a few weeks ago when department officials discovered that additional funding was available for the Transportation Enhancement Program.
When that windfall - appeared, Rappahannock was first on the list.
The proposal calls for 14 markers that will be located along county roads and a kiosk that will be built next to the Rappahannock County Library.
Woodville residents John and Judy Tole spent two years putting the proposal together.
“It’s something that I think will benefit the county,” John Tole said. “It’s a niche in tourism that’s fairly big in this area.”
