Nack to sign books
The Virginia Horse Center in Lexington will host legendary sports writer Bill Nack to a book signing July 7. Nack will sign copies of his newest book, “Ruffian: A Racetrack Romance” from 11 a.m.-7:30 p.m.
Nack, who lives in Washington, D.C., is also author of “Secretariat: Making of a Champion” and “My Turf: Horses, Boxers, Blood Money and the Sporting Life ” All books will be available for purchase.
Nack’s career included stints as sports editor and later editor of the Daily Illini, service in the army in Vietnam, covering political and environmental issues for Newsday, and more than 20 years as senior sports writer for Sports Illustrated.
In “Ruffian,” Nack covers the life of unbeaten filly sensation Ruffian, who shattered her foreleg in a match race with Derby winner Foolish Pleasure.
“We forget how fragile a Thoroughbred racehorse is until one breaks down on national television,” Nack said. “Such was the case with Ruffian and, more recently, Barbaro. Sometimes, out of tragedy comes awareness.”
