ELABORATE EIGHTIETH. A large group of family and friends celebrated Carl Coon’s 80th birthday recently with an adaptation of a Nepalese ceremony to honor their elders. Coon was U.S. ambassador to Nepal in the early 1980s before retiring to Rappahannock County. Also honored were two other “Elders” in his family—his wife, Jane, and his sister-inlaw, Joyce Abell, both of whom also have reached the magic “age of 77 years and 7 months where they are no longer considered mere mortals but are becoming gods.” Coon is carried on a palanquin—a sedan chair carried by family and friends.
