Sybil, Bouncer’s regular whip, had driven the pony in the spring trials, but as a backyard owner and an amateur, just competing advanced level was a big step for Humphreys.

Sybil said that even as recently as two years ago, she could barely remember which way to turn in the fast-paced marathon test, even with able instructions from husband Wayne, a Naval Academy grad who served as his wife’s navigator until giving way to a lighterweight to lessen 13-hand Bouncer’s load in the long and demanding marathon.

Bouncer was named team alternate to the team earlier this spring. Stafford qualified as one of the two single pony drivers (a driving “team” includes two single ponies, two pairs and two four-in-hands), but at the last minute found herself without a pony to complete.
