amendment passes
A new amendment to Rappahannock County’s zoning code will allow auto sales and services in the Highway Commercial Zone between Sperryville and Shenandoah National Park along U.S. 211.
The County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the amendment Monday. Piedmont District Supervisors Eddie Wayland, who represents the area where the zone is located, made the motion for approval.
Willie and Cathem Smith applied for the amendment, because they want to sell vintage cars and other vehicles on the former site of Cooter’s Place, which they own. Since their property is located entirely within the flood plain of the Thornton River, car sales will only be allowed inside existing buildings on the lot.
The amendment requires a special-use permit before a landowner is allowed to sell autos on site, so the Smiths will need to apply for that permit before they can set up the new business.
Scrabble School
Bob Lander, president of the Scrabble School Preservation Foundation, told the board that a $250,000 grant the organization applied for was denied.
Lander said the group will continue to pursue funding to convert the old segregated school to a senior citizens center.
