The Rappahannock County School Board gathered Tuesday night for its first meeting following the elections on Nov. 6. All the board members won reelection. Only one of the members, Jackson District representative Wesley Mills, faced an opponent on the ballot, though Wakefield representative Rosa Crocker lost about 20 percent of die vote to write-in candidates.
Some board members expressed dismay at the apparently low county interest in service on the board.
“It hurts that theie are so few people interested in running for school board and supervisor,9 Hampton District representative Meredith Gorfein said.
Board member Rosa Crocker echoed Gorfein’s complaint.
“[i]t is unfortunate,” she said.
Board member Wesley Mills suggested that the board create an informational document detailing its duties that would be made available to the public
“I believe it would be really helpful for people who want to run. to know what a school board member does,” he said.
He said that when he first took his seat on the school board in 2000, the only advice he received came from Crocker, who, he said, asked him “Do you know how miirfi time this takes?”
