Traditionally, most hunters have wanted to hunt trophy bucks, but many studies have shown that killing males is not an effective means of controlling the population. There is always a surplus of males, and it’s only by taking does that the deer population can be effectively reduced.

However, many hunters resist killing does or any deer with antlers, either because there is no trophy involved or because they feel that shooting does is just not right. Over the past several years, Virginia has encouraged more hunting of does through bag limits.
