To explore the development of Virginia-based local and regional food systems, and discuss a variety of local farm and food projects, Virginia Cooperative Extension is hosting a oneday conference titled “Connecting Farms, Food & Communities— Developing the Producer, Market, Table Link” on December 6 at Graves Mountain Lodge in beautiful Syria, Virginia (Madison County). Graves Mountain Lodge is located on Route 670, 10 miles northwest of Madison, Virginia.

Dr. Fred Kirschenmann, a Distinguished Fellow from Iowa State University’s Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, is the scheduled keynote speaker. Dr. Kirschenmann will synthesize the local food movement and detail what it can do for Virginia agriculture, economy, and local communities. After this address, a series of general sessions have been planned to highlight innovative strategies and marketing channels farmers can use to connect to consumers. A number of other resource speakers have been contacted that include educators, local chefs, grocery store representatives, restaurant owners, farmers, and food entrepreneurs.

The conference will begin at 9:00 a.m. and run until approximately 4:30 p.m. The cost to attend this event is $20, which includes lunch, break refreshments and materials.
