Yet despite the large percentage of survey respondents who indicated that they had trouble finding affordable housing, 66 percent technically lived in affordable circumstances, devoting less than one-third of their yearly income to housing costs.
Renters at the schools are paying significantly less than the typical cost of housing in Rappahannock. School respondents paid an average of $587 for one-bedroom rentals — $188 less than the countywide average of $775.
This might indicate a hidden market of unadvertised rentals, said Lea Vittitow, project manager for the housing partnership.
“There’s a word-of-mouth network,” she said.
But Vittitow cautioned that the good news might behe other difficulties. Making the jump from renting to owning may still be tough, she said.
“It's really hard to make any kind of generalizing statement based on this,” she said. “1 would hesitate to say that this means everything is OK. I think it’s encouraging”
