taxes in the county have organized in an attempt to lessen the burden on local property owners.
Concerned Taxpayers of Rappahannock County met Nov. 1 at the Rappahannock County Library for an informed discussion. A half-dozen people attended the meeting.
Tom Junk, a Sperryville resident, called the meeting. He said rising prices for fuel and other necessities are making tax increases tougher to swallow. “As things get tighter, taxes get more attention,” he said.
And citizens need to start paying attention to some “bigticket items” that will be coming before county leaders in the near future, Junk said. Two of those items are the county schools budget for next year and possibly a new regional jail to be built in cooperation with Shenandoah and Warren counties.
The county7s school board will start building their budget in January, and citizens need to start paying attention if they hope to influence it. The schools budget is very important to citizens with an eye on taxes, because roughly 60 percent of the county’s annual budget goes to pay for public schools.
