There are about 40 species of deer worldwide, in every continent except Australia • Virginia originally had two species, the white-tailed deer and the much larger elk. Over hunting by European settlers extirpated efc from the Commonwealth by the 18th century, and white-tails had similarly disappeared from the Northern Piedmont area by the early 20th century. • The white-tail's dose relative, the mule deer, occurs in the western United States. Moose and caribou, the other two North American members of the deer family, occur only in northern states and Canada. • Restoration programs for white-tails begun in the 1930s have been a huge success.
