antler-less deer. The Deer Control Assistance Program allows more take of antler-less deer on land with proven crop depredations or other property damage.
For many years, the Humane Society of the United States has advocated contraception as an alternative to hunting for deer and other large mammals. In their method, called immunocontraception, females are inoculated with an extract from pig ovaries which prevents their eggs from being fertilized.
McShea has studied this technique at the CRC in Front Royal. He found the requirement to immunize each female twice the first year, plus an annual booster, made the application of the technique difficult and expensive for a large, unconfined deer population. However, the National Park Service has had promising results using immunocontraception on the confined population of deer on Fire Island National Seashore in New York.
