Williams had planned on getting his name on the hwliat, and in June he collected signatures from Wakefield residents and took them to the Rappahannock County Electoral Board. He mistakenly thought he needed only 75 to get an the ballot, when in fact he needed 125.
He missed the deadline for the prerequisite signatures, and then was left with the option of naming as a write-in candidate. He tossed the idea around for a while, bat an illness in die family drew his attention away from die race, and he only decided to take a stab at it the night before the election.
