Female white-tails and most other deer do not grow antlers (but caribou of the Pacific Northwest and Canada have antlers on both sexes). • Antlers are made of bone and are covered with a fuzzy skin called velvet, which is rich in blood vessels to feed their rapid growth (antlers are by far the fastest growing type of bone). After growth stops, the velvet dries and bucks scrape off the remains on young trees. • Shed antlers are seldom found in the woods because they are quickly gnawed by rodents for their high calcium content • Elk antlers from Western states are sometimes collected and sold to the tracfitional Chinese medicine industry. • The horns of cattle, sheep, goats, and antelopes are very different — they are permanently attached and are made of keratin, the same kind of protein that makes up their hooves (and our fingernails).
