Leake’s mother, LaMerle Williams, was a poll worker the first year the Chester Gap precinct opened in the 1960s. Now Leake carries on the family tradition.
Leake and Wines encouraged Hickerson to get involved. Hickerson, Wines and Gilkey are next-door neighbors.
“Just being a local is why Tm here, that’s all I can tell you,” Gilkey explains.
Chester Gap is the county’s newest precinct and the Wakefield District is the only district in the county with more than one place to vote.
Lee Thornton and Merrit Greeley helped get the precinct started some 40 years ago. Prior to that, Chester Gap residents had to vote in Flint Hill, which still has a precinct at its fire hall.
