Election season is a time when political candidates and their contributors spend a lot of time opening their pocketbooks, and Rappahannock County was no exception this year.
The three candidates running for county sheriff raised nearly $30,000 in cash and inkind contributions to their campaigns.
The winning candidate, Connie Compton Smith, took in $10,792 in cash and $519 worth of in-kind donations, according to campaign finance reports. She also took out two loans worth a total of $1,000 that she had already repaid as of Oct. 29, when the most recent report was due at the county registrar’s office.
According to the reports, Smith had spent $10,513.12 on her campaign as of Oct. 29.
Bill Fletchei; of Sperryville, was Smith’s top contributor. He gave $1,600 to her campaign. Malcolm Alls and the Online Resource Group each donated $1,000 to Smith’s successful bid for sheriff
Chris Williams, the runnerup in the sheriffs race, raised $5,939.75 in cash and $932.50 worth of in-kind contributions and took out two loans totaling $2,353.50, according to finance reports. As of Oct. 29, he had spent $6,791.72 on his campaign
His most generous contributor was D.K. Pottery and Crafts in Front RoyaL The company gave $1,150 to his run for sheriff The next largest donor to Williams’ campaign was Martin Rekow, who gave $500.
J.C. Welch, who finished third in the election, raised $8,450 in cash and $3,204.44 worth of in-kind contributions, acmyrfing to the reports. He also took out five loans totaling $4,509.66. As iff Oct. 29, he had spent $7,760.65.
Welch was his own largest contributor. According to the finance reports he filed at the registrar’s office, he gave $1,760 in cash to his campaign. Culpeper Antiques, Russell Jenkins and Michael EL Welch each donated $1,000 to his run for sheriff
Williams received the most votes compared to how much money he spent. He spent $6.64 for each of the 1,022 votes he received, while Smith spent $8.21 per vote 11,280 votes total) and Welch spent $11.29 per vote (687 votes total).
The three candidates have two more finance reports due an Dec. 6 and Jan. 15.
