pest, however, is not an easy question. It’s dear from the earliest accounts of the Jamestown settlement that deer were abundant in Virginia. One of America’s most eminent naturalists, Ernest Thompson Seton, estimated that the pre-settlement deer populations averaged 10 to 20 per square mile. If accurate, this would indicate that there were 400,000 to 800,000 deer in' Vuq£nia in 1600, considerably less than the estimate of the current population. However, recent experts have questioned Seton’s deer density estimate, and it’s likely we will never know how many deer there realty ware.
