Superintendent R. Taylor Hoskins of Shenandoah National Park today announced the observance of the 47th anniversary of the establishment of the National Park Service. Shenandoah National Park visitors, from near and far, attended special campfire programs commemorating the 47th anniversary of the establishment of the National Park Service. An illustrated talk titled "Our National Parks, An American Heritage" was given at the Skyland Campfire Circle Sunday evening August 25, and "The Past, Present, and Future of Shenandoah National Park" was given Monday evening August 26 at the Big Meadows Amphitheater. On August 25, 1916, Congress passed a bill, signed into law by President Wilson, establishing the National Park Service as a bureau in the Department of the Interior. For the first time, the National Parks were under one bureau, and under one direction, Stephen T. Mather.
