From the start the hike was not very hard. Most of it was level ground and steep uphill. At about noon we reached Beaubien. Here we ate lunch and picked up our supplies for the hike to Black Mountain and to Cypher’s Mine. After lunch we set out for Black Mt. Trail Camp. The hike was fairly easy, about half of it being a very steep inclined downhill. When we reached the camp, we were assigned by the director to mate a new campsite as our conservation project. This project was a requirement for our 50 Miler Badge, which all of us hope to get. We spent about 3 hours cleaning up the place, building a fireplace, and setting up our tents. About 8:00 we ate supper and went to bed. Before retiring, we decided to call our campsite Virginia City.
August 8, 1963 — Today we arose and prepared for work on the conservation part of our 50 Miler Badge. We first ate breakfast and then started to work. Our work consisted of three main parts. They were as follows: 1. Building a table 2. Building a barricade around the campsite, and 3. Cleaning the area of rotten trees and sticks. We cut the logs for the table and started the barricade. After that at about 10;30 we all went panning for gold. Although some of the boys had no luck, some got quite a bit of gold flakes; David Palm^t got 16 flakes,1 which1'is about
