THE Rappahannock Supervisors are to be commended for standing by the county’s zoning and subdivision ordinances and deciding not to grant the latest variance request. It was not an easy decision; the applicants were worthy and felt they had compelling reasons for their request. But the Supervisors were wise in regarding the well-being of the community as a whole as being even more compelling.
Rappahannock, along with most rural Virginia counties, is governed by cautious, conservative Supervisors. They don’t like to spend money necessarily, and, by and large, theirs is the conservative outlook that an individual ought to be able to do with his property what he wants. But at the same time, Rappahannock has been fortunate in having governing officials who also realize that a small county can be torn to shreds, transformed almost overnight into something new and ugly, by a failure to recognize that everyone cannot be allowed to act individually with no regard for his neighbors.
