THIS IS the way prospects for Virginia farm prices looked to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce last Friday. The Department offers it to farmers with the warning that no one can predict prices and be accurate all the time.
CATTLE—Cattle prices are not expected to show much strengthening in the next few weeks. Placements of cattle on feed in the 23 major feeding states raised the inventory to over a year ago for the first time since October 1973. The October 1, 23 state inventory of cattle on feed was two percent above October 1974, but still 23 percent below the record October 1 record set in 1973. The surge of feeder cattle placements in late summer resulted from relatively strong fed cattle prices and continued favorable feeding margins.
Snow and subnormal temperatures across the Midwest increased the need for supplemental feeding of cattle. By early December, winter grazing prospects had improved in the Texas Plains and in southwest Oklahoma. Livestock
