THE advantages of a Theodolite and the computer are accuracy and time, according to Manson. To compute all of the figures necessary for a completely accurate calculation would take months, where with the computer device it is a matter of hours.

“The new methods used in surveying provide much more accurate results and tne Theodolite will give the vertical angle for which the horizontal distance is computed,” said Manson.

“There is no surviving copy of the original survey of the Town,” he said, “the plat was lost, but the town basically follows his survey.”

Manson says he has been involved with surveying since about 1963 and exclusively for the past seven years. He is employed with Rappahannock Surveys, Inc., established by Wayne E. Niskanen in Washington.

“To be a licensed surveyor in Virginia, one must pass a very strict examination and have a basic understanding of geometry anc trigonometry,” he said.
