Commonwealth’s Attorney George Davis said “we shouldn’t expect the sheriff’s department to rely on used clothing that’s well worn and doesn’t fit.” The Supervisors agreed that Buntin may spend $300 on uniforms.
Buntin said the Supervisors ought to be aware of the condition of the jail building, which he said is “quite run down.” At this point, it’s not fit for a family to live in, he said, but the new sheriff feels a live-in jailer and his family is the only proper way to run the jail. Three bachelor deputies who take turns staying in the jail overnight just aren’t going to take care of the building as well as a family which lives there fulltime, Buntin said.
