The kindergarten program would be for students who would enter first grade in 1977.
Mrs. Beverly Massie said the School Board could “get left holding the bag,’’ if students drop out of the kindergarten after it starts. The modular classrooms, teachers and buses will be contracted for or hired at the first of the year. Norton acknowledged “when you’re dealing with so few students, what a few of them decide to do can make a big difference. It places the county in a precarious situation,” he agreed.
Mary Quaintance, principal of die Elementary School, said the pre-school program had been a satisfactory one. It allows the teachers to give “readiness” tests which help place the students and gives the children a chance to get adjusted to the classroom environment before school starts.
“We have several alternatives,” Montague said to his fellow Board members. We try a full kindergarten program; leave the preschool program as it is; or try to “augment” the pre-school program and try to convince the state board of education it suffices for a kindergarten.”
