heifers, $44-45; and mixed good and choice heifers, $42.50-43.50. Cattle prices at Virginia auctions last week were: good steers, $3344; good heifers, $26-36.50. At a special State graded sale at Orange last week, choice steers 850-1000 lbs. $43.25-44.25; 1000-1200 lbs., $43.75-46.00; good 825-1000 lbs., $40.25-43.50; 1000-1200 lbs., $40. 75-43; and choice heifers 8251000 lbs., $39.75-42.25.

HOGS—Short supply and a normal seasonal up trend should hold hog prices near the present level for the immediate future. The December 22nd hog supply report will give a better indication of the situation.

Hog slaughter through October has totaled 17 percent below the same period of 1974. October slaughter was 23 percent below October 1974 and 19 percent below October 1973. Slaughter for the last quarter of the year is expected to be 21-23 percent below a year earlier. This level of production will hold into the early part of 1976 based on September 1 farrowing plans for the 14 corn belt states hog report. Cold
