Rappahannock fire fighters have been busy battling an outbreak of fires here and in neighboring Madison County over the past week.
According to Fire Warden Tippy Jenkins, a report of a blaze on the mountain peak in Horse Shoe Hollow was turned in at about 1 p.m. on Monday. Approximately one and a half acres were burning when he arrived at the scene.
Fire companies from Flint Hill, Washington and Castleton plus civilian volunteers had the fire under control with a line around it by 5 p.m. Jenkins did mop up work and stayed at the site until midnight. He reported that approximately three acres burned before the fire was extinguished.
The cause of the Horse Shoe Hollow fire was undetermined although Jenkins said he expected it had been started accidentally by a hiker or hunter. “It’s a bad place to get to, a lot of hard climbing and hiking,” he explained, adding that he felt no one but a hiker or hunter would have traveled over the rough terrain.
