Meeting
Lewis Fickett of Fredericksburg, a candidate seeking the Democratic nomination for member of Congress from the 7th Congressional District, attended the Rappahannock County Democratic Party fund-raiser at the Chester Gap Fire House on Saturday evening, April 15. Also attending were Barbara and Rufus Phillips of McLean, Virginia. Rufus Phillips is contending for the Democratic Party's nomination as a candidate for the U. S. Senate in this November’s election.
The Phillips came, as they said, "To persuade the four uncommitted delegates elected at the mass meeting to support Rufus.” These delegates. Mary Edna Schaefer, Dorothy Davis. Hubert Gilkey, and Edward Bailey were all in attendance, as were Sherman Williams and Diana Bird, the elected alternates to the State convention in Williamsburg and the Congressional District convention in Charlottesville.
Visitors from Culpeper included Butch Davies and his mother, Mrs. Davies; and several active Democrats came from Page County. New, as well as well-known Democrats from the area, many visiting Chester Gap for the first time, made the social gathering a success and brought in more than $300.00 for the Party’s treasury. Committee members and friends, as in the past, provided a buffet featuring a variety of gourmet delicacies.
