"In the 1977 season, I found an integrated pest management program generally satisfactory,” Sharfi stated. But he noted several qualifications. First, he started his IPM program in late spring after he’d already established pretty good insect and disease control.
Secondly, the previous season had been extremely dry and during a drought, less sprays are required anyway. “So my experience in 1977 may not be very meaningful,” he said.
“An IPM program takes a level of skill quite beyond the level of an ordinary spray program,” Sharp maintained. “It may be the way of the future in this business...(but) I think we can’t rush people into it too precipitously because there are economic considerations at work here,” he concluded.
Chemicals have enabled people to live “fuller, cleaner lives,” according to Mason Reger, Staufford Chemical Company representative who put forward the case for chemical use at the RLEP meeting. He acknowledged that there was a growing movement to reduce the amount of chemical use but he cautioned against rolling back chemical use too far unless mankind wanted again to be plagued by lice, fleas, ticks mosquitos and the diseases these pests carry.
