The Rappahannock County School Board wants to provide quality education for its students; to do so, it must employ quality educators. The County is most fortunate to have these outstanding teachers, yet the School Board adamantly refuses to compensate them for their services. Teachers are constantly expected to unselfishly give of their free time in the name of education. But, when the teachers request a cost of living increases to meet the demands of today’s economy, they are criticized and ridiculed. ‘‘Lack of disciplinary problems should compensate for low salaries," said one gentleman attending the meeting. Much to my dismay, however, a lack of disciplinary problems does not pay the grocery bills, mortgages, car payments, doctor bills, and the like.
Because of its stand, the Rappahannock County School Board is forcing its teachers to seek employment elsewhere. This is of little consequence to the Board, since, as they pointed out, the supply of teachers is much greater than the demand. It’s ironic that the School Board members can be so blind to the fact that the children, who supposedly are their primary concern, will suffer the greatest from the loss of these excellent educators.
