I’d like to put in a few kind words for the Rappahannock County Farmers. Their principal crops are cattle and apples. Consider the record: For the past 3 years cattle have sold below the cost of production. There has been one dry spring that ruined the hay crop, and two severe winters that increased the use of feed. Due to late spring freezes, the last two fruit crops have been badly damaged, leaving from onefourth to one-third crop, which won't pay.
Still the farmers haven’t quit, but they keep on working and paying taxes, hoping that “next year will be better." And all the while, living costs and production costs have been going up.
