Purchase Refused
Lynch and O’Connell, now renting the restaurant, on Dec. 26 exercised their option to buy the entire building for $70,000. The purchase must be completed by Jan. 25 or the building can be put up for sale to the public.
According to attorney Will of the law firm of Davies, Crigler and Barrell in Culpeper, the sales contract stipulates that any lease on The Country Store is to be honored by the new purchasers.
Lynch said that the owners offered the store business and inventory for sale, asking $27,000.
“We just got a license to sell liquor by the drink,” Lynch said. “We wanted the extra (store) space to accommodate a lounge.”
But when the restauranteurs offered $27,000 for the store business (in effect, buy the current 20year lease), the offer was refused.
“The owners turned down our offer, saying that they wanted more (money) for the business,” Lynch said. “We refused to pay more as it was advertised through a realtor for $27,000. Then the doors to the restaurant were boarded shut.”
"1 think it's obvious what’s going on,” he said.
Town Council Acts
Lynch and O’Connell, troubled by the possible loss of business caused by the boarded doors, took their problems Tuesday night before Washington town council.
