To the editor:
The announced retirement of Eva Long Smith causes me to reminisce as to her eighteen years of fine service to Rappahannock County. During this entire period she has been one of the most unselfish, untiring and painstaking public officials I have had the privilege of knowing and being associated with, though these have numbered in the hundreds.
Eva has always held her duty to the public as her guiding star. Not only has she performed well in all the matters assigned to her or coming within the scope of her office—she has sought out additional means to help the public, has informed herself as to the duties of her several offices, has welcomed suggestions so as to enable her to fulfill her offices beyond the call of duty. Eva Iras ever been the unassuming, modest, and able performer—never seeking limelight for herself—yet always being on hand and offering to be helpful when needed.
It has been refreshing to be associated with a lady of Eva’s calibre and when she ceases to be in the public service of Rappahannock County it wifi be a genuine and indispensable loss to our County and its people.
