Lynch said that council agreed to “notify the State Fire Marshal about the problem."
“I think the fire marshal will say that a fire hazard would exist if we tried to operate The Inn with the front doors boarded shut,” Lynch said.
“I suspect it’s our responsibility to contact the fire marshal," said Mayor Newbill Miller at Tuesday’s meeting of the Washington Council after being notified of the locked and boarded doors at The Inn.
Charles Eldred, who has a business and home across the street from The Inn, asked that the request for a fire marshal's inspection be expedited, maintaining that a fire in the Country Store building would endanger his property.
Council member Dorothy Hawkins noted that three other homes in the vicinity would also be threatened should fire break out.
“I don’t want anybody to interpret this as the town taking sides,” interjected Miller. "It’s our responsibility to check for any potential fire code violations.”
