When it comes down to the wire, during income tax filing, farmers may be overlooking some very important deductions, a Virginia Tech Extension specialist said.

“Farmers are entitled to travel expenses incurred in the course of their business," G. Wayne Burkhart, Virginia Tech Extension specialist in farm management, said.

Registration fees and the cost of driving to local agricultural educational meetings are both deductible. If the business trip takes the farmer away from home overnight, the lodging and food costs are also deductible.
