No one expects the OUF to capture control of either house this year, but major inroads are considered a real possibility in both. State Republican Chairman George McMath says the party will field more candidates for the General Assembly than it ever has in the history of the state.
Backing up these candidates will be the vast financial and technical resources of the Republican State Central Committee, which has been called one of the best state organizations in the nation. Adding credibility to their challenge will be the 1977 landslide victory of Gov. John Dalton and last year’s win, albeit a narrow one, by Sen. John W. Warner. \
Democrats Nervous
Naturally, all of this makes the Democrats understandably nervous, and since they are the majority party, what the legislature does or fails to do could come home to haunt them when the campaigns get underway this summer.
