This year, citizens will be able to go over the budget at the same time as the ' School Board members. Then, they 11 have two weeks to present their opinions on specific proposals to the Board before it votes to adopt the - budget on March 20.
The ’ new process doesn’t automatically ensure that all citizen concerns will be reflected in the approved budget. The School Board members will still face the unenviable task of weighing educational needs against the tax rate required to pay for those needs. And if they should go all out to satisfy the schools, they 11 still have to fight the Board of Supervisors for funding.
But at least this year, no one in the community can complain that they weren’t given the chance to speak out on how 70 percent of Rappahannock’s total budget—money spent to run the county’s schools—should be spent.
