The Route 1001 bridge across the Thornton River in Sperryville was closed by the highway department October 3, and will remain closed at least through November and perhaps permanently.
“It was closed because of surface conditions,” explained resident highway engineer Don Askew, adding that the bridge had deteriorated for many years.
Askew’s remarks came at the public hearing on the update of the county’s sixyear secondary road plan held by the Rappahannock supervisors last Thursday.
