To the editor:
I have heard rumors that the bridge in Sperryville will be closed. 1 find this very difficult to believe. This bridge has been a link to Sperryville for many years and 1 can not wee where it has been a hindrance.
Why close it now?
I heard "The people” want the bridge closed because of tractor trailers speeding through the area. This could be corrected by posting signs “no trailers". As far as the speeding is concerned, this is a job for the police.
They could use radar more often and post more speed signs. 1 know this would be using more of the tax payers money, but it is used for other things that are not as important as this bridge.
If the people allow this bridge to be closed, then the two by the old Co-op will most likely be next. The rescue squad has just moved to the VFW hall. Suppose there was a bad accident, with people in critical condition. Some members of the rescue squad live out Route 211.
This means they would have to go around and back through town to reach the accident. In a case where every minute counts, this could mean someone's life.
Another thing to think about is the tourist trade. Tourists coming off the mountain cross this bridge t>' visit the store and the antique shop. Without this bridge, they would continue on through.
Can we afford to lose this trade?
