Mail Track Accident
Ann Ellis asked that Route 680 leading back from Dennis’ Store be widened. She told the supervisors that her daughter had been involved in a serious accident with a mail truck on the road. All the property owners on Route 680 are willing to donate the land required to widen the road, Mrs. Ellis added, noting that the school bus couldn’t travel the road due to lack of passing room.
H. B. Wood, supervisor from Mrs. Ellis’ district, interjected that he’d checked the road and also found sight distance poor.
Askew responded that improvements to Route 680 would have to wait for next year. The only immediate project that could be undertaken, he said, would be to install a culvert.
He emphasized that all the necesary land required to widen the road would have to be donated. Since the highway department doesn’t exercise its powers of eminent domain as a rule on secondary roads, “donated right-of-way is the key to every secondary road improvement project in the state of Virginia,” Askew
