Askew replied that the highway department must handle improvement and repair projects on 231 miles of secondary roads with a crew of only about 20 men. “It’s humanly impossible” to handle all requests, he stated. Askew noted that $50,000 had already been spent on Route 621 this year. “So you can hardly say we haven't done anything.”
Mrs. Martin agreed with Jenkins that Route 621 was “not fit for a horse and buggy to travel over.”
James Jenkins reemphasized the danger of school bus accidents. When he meets a school bus while carrying a load of apples, Jenkins said, he backs up around the curve or over the hill. “There’s no law that says I have to but it’s dangerous for a bus to do,” he said, adding that he will be the one to get a ticket should an accident occur while he’s backing.
