Space needs at the elementary school received attention at last week’s meeting of the Rappahannock school board.
Assistant superintendent Rob McDaniel reported'that an additional elementary teacher for a self-contained learning disabilities class is projected for next year. “The reason I'm bringing it up now is because we do not have a classroom available,” he said.
According to McDaniel, Rappahannock currently sends 14 learning disabled (LD) students to Piedmont regional school. Piedmont’s facilities should be used; he said, when a school has too few students in a particular category to justify hiring an additional teacher locally.
There are enough Rappahannock students for another LD teacher in the county, he maintained.
Of the 14 LD students at Piedmont, nine attend a morning class' that includes no students from any of'the other counties sharing in Piedmont, according to McDaniel.
