The counseling sessions will provide the family with an opportunity to look af the student’s problem with drugs or alcohol in a "gentle, subtle, non-threatening way,” he said.

Chairman Beverly Massie asked if the counseling provided to students last year on a more informal basis had shown any success.
“It’S hard to measure'the effectiveness of what we do,” McGarvey answered. “Only one or two of the families out of 'the four or five referred last year really cooperated...There’s still a certain stigma attached to being referred to a mental health clinic,” he noted.
McGarvey agreed with Eldred' that' there’s a “very real possibility” that counseling “might ' help some," adding that a similar program had been successful in Fairfax County.
