Eastham appeared to be in favor of milder penalties for alcohol use than for drug use. “Students will go home and see daddy drinking a beer, even a‘shot of bourbon...or mom (drinking a beer) while she looks at' the soap operas. I don’t' think anywhere in Rappahannock you’ll find students going home and seeing daddy smoking marijuana, japping heroin or sniffing cocaine,*’ he said.
“Adopt this policy (with equal penalties for drug and alcohol use) and'the'children will' think we’re' the same old hypocritical bumpkins who say one thing and do another,” Eastham warned.
With “the whole county going to ABC stores,” it will only widen the generation gap to make alcohol use subject to the same disciplinary action as heroin, cocaine and marijuana,' he maintained.
Rules Of Conduct
“I wouldn’t look to ' the Rappahannock school board to define what is a dangerous substance but to establish rules of conduct,” responded mental health clinic director Jim McGarvey, at'the school board meeting to explain substance abuse counseling programs offered by the Rappahannock clinic.
