According to history, Willis replied, “I have no family; I am a Christian and I am not afraid to die.” He requested that he be allowed to pray before he died and his request was granted. In his prayers he asked God’s forgiveness ofhis executioners.
After the hanging which took place near Huntly, Willis’ body was removed from the tree and placed in a grave in a corner of the Baptist Cemetery in Flint Hill. The tree from which Willis was hung decayed from age and weather and was destroyed when Route 522 to Front Royal was widened. To establish the place, an historical marker was erected.
The church at the foot of the mountain, formerly known as Shiloh Methodist, was renamed Willis Chapel in memory of this brave, young man who freely gave his life for his fellowman.
