Buntin: “Yes it is. For one thing, we don't have cars. For another, our pay scale is lower ’ than' the surrounding counties and other police agencies. It’s difficult to find local people who are qualified and interested in police work.”
—What sort of training is provided to new deputies without police experience?
Buntin: “They have to have seven weeks of training at the Central Shenandoah Criminal Justice Training Center at Waynesboro within the first year' they’re hired in order to qualify for'the pay scale ' that’s set up by ' the Sheriffs Association. The cost of'this training is paid through LEA A, 5 percent State. 90 percent Federal, 5 percent County.”
