A pendulum arm drew intricate geometric patterns with a magic marker as knots of youngsters watched with rapt interest. At another display, kids looked on as a second pendulum created designs in sand. A corner of the main room was devoted to optica] illusions that taught the kids they can’t always trust the messages their eyes send their brains.
Seventh graders took turns piling into a replica of a space capsule and learned first hand the cramped conditions that our astronauts endured hurtling through the unknown.
Safety Valve The hour of freedom to make noise, run and handle exhibits at the Science Museum allowed the kids to let off steam they’d built up tiptoeing around the Capitol.
After the "Discovery Room,” they were in a much better frame of mind for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts where the rules of “Quiet” and “Don’t Touch” were back in force. Without all that pent-up, antsy energy, the kids could saunter through exhibit halls and enjoy art treasures, including Faberge eggs created for the czars of Russia, jewelry by Salvador Dali, a wrinkled Egyptian mummy thousands of years old and paintings by the great masters.
