Rappahannock's only twoyear program is Ford’s morning class in building trades. The curriculum is aimed at students who aren’t "academically oriented" and covers carpentry, plumbing and electrical wiring, primarily for residences.
Ford also touches on welding and automotive mechanics. “If they have a car. 1 let them bring it in to work on,” he said. He added that his introduction to welding gives boys with jobs on farms enough training to do welding repairs necessary in an agricultural operation.
“The kids get a crack at doing all sorts of projects that aren’t actually in our curriculum,” he continued. The 12 students in the building trades class will soon have the opportunity to learn a little something about fluorescent lighting. Ford plans to put them to work replacing 12 fluorescent units in the vocational shop, a job that’s taken care of by the maintenance staff in most other schools.
