hand with a vivid memory of Lynne Baines’ shrill 6:30 a.m. wake-up whistle, I fought the urge to read a few more pages and settled instead for sleep.
Even so, I wasn’t prepared for the shock of early morning. I rose but I was a long, lofig way from shining. The lids lightened a little after a couple cups of coffee. Still, I wasn’t anywhere near alert until we were introduced to the woman who was to guide us back through Williamsburg.
Energy Transfusion
Mrs. Wilson was a wonder. She had enough energy for an army and she managed to share it with us. We all caught a contact high from her laughing voice and we learned-teacher, chaperone and seventh graders alike.
She encouraged the children to view their Trailways bus as a time capsule that had carried them back to the 18th century. “Now, everything you see, I want you to think how it got here. Fill this town with people,” she told the group.
As a carnage drove by, she asked the kids to envision the number of crafts persons it had taken to put that carriage on the street. The answers came flying back as the seventh graders caught her enthusiasm. “A blacksmith,” shouted one, noticing the metal pieces. “A carpenter,’’ added another.
